Allergy-Free Indoor Plants

In most industrialized nations, such as the U.S., we spend as much as 80 to 90 percent of our time indoors. While air pollution and allergens are typically associated with an outdoor environment, they can easily infiltrate your home or business leaving you with irritating particles in the air. Luckily, you can improve your air quality easily and effectively with indoor plants.

Peace Lily Varieties

The Peace Lily is a brilliant choice to include in your home or office for air quality. It is extremely effective at filtering formaldehyde and trichloroethylene (commonly used as an industrial solvent). The Peace Lily’s elegant flower also has the ability to absorb harsh vapors from alcohol and acetone. Readily absorbing mold, the Peace Lily actively feeds on it, keeping the mold spores from growing and thriving in other parts of your indoor space. As an indoor plant, these are ideal because they require low to medium light and minimal water.

Snake Plant (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue)

The Snake Plant, otherwise known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue or Sanseveria, is an ideal plant for indoor spaces because it’s an incredible air purifier. According to studies performed by NASA, the plant has consistently been proven to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides. This means that industries and workspaces that use products or produce products with these chemicals would greatly benefit by keeping several Snake Plants around. The Snake Plant purifies air by absorbing toxins through the leaves and producing oxygen. In fact, the Sanseveria is an ideal bedroom plant. Most plants release carbon dioxide at night (in the absence of photosynthesis), whereas the Sanseveria continues to produce oxygen.

Dracaena “Janet Craig”

‘Janet Craig’ is one of the few plants that have taken on the name of a cultivar as a common plant name itself. Although tropical by nature, it can adapt quite well to average indoor conditions and is able to tolerate neglect and low lighting conditions. According to NASA’s data, it can remove Formaldehyde, at a rate of 1,328 micrograms per hour. Dr. Bill Wolverton Ph.D. (founder of Wolverton Environmental Services, Inc.) has identified the Janet Craig as the best in the dracaena fragrans family for clearing the air, and one of the best plants overall for removing trichloroethylene (TCH).
